How long would it take to generate 12 KWH (with the below suggested methods?)

1- solar power

2- turbine (hydro/wind)

3- bicycle hooked to a generator

The answer to method 1 and 2 depends on the size of the solar array or turbine. If, for example, the turbine is one of the ones at Niagra Falls, it will take a very short time to generate 12 kW·h.

The bicycle is easier to make a reasonable guess about. I find that for short times on my exercise machine, I can create 200 W. If I were more fit, I could do so for a long time. If we suppose the efficiency of the generator is 25%, then 50 W of electricity could be generated. The formula that applies in this case is

energy = power · time

12 kW· h = 0.05 kW · t

t = 12/0.05 h

t = 240 h
