What do I torque the spark plugs in my 2003 honda accord. The manual says 13 ft-lbs.The plugs I bought say 21?
If I DO torque to 13, will the plugs (BOSCH Platinum IR Fusion PN 4508) back out? If I torque to 21, will I damage the engine?
This is not a huge deal, and should only be done by hand. Make it snug and then crush the gasket. I'd advise using an anti-sieze paste, especially in aluminum heads. This was recommended to me several years ago and it makes them come out so much easier. Before then I used a drop of oil on the plug threads. Crude, but it works. I've never used a torque wrench on plugs. They aren't a super critical thing and I've never seen one back out. The biggest risk is cross threading, so make sure the plug enters easily and follows the threads in the head. If the steel plug resists and you force it, it will cut across the threads in the soft aluminum head. That can be fixed, but it's nasty so be careful and follow the threads.
