Spare power for my boat?
I have a 25ft cabin Cruiser that is perfectly up to spec with marine code as far as the electrical system. I want to add a power system to be able to run a microwave and a TV while not hooked to shore power. Forget adding a generator-too many negatives to list. My idea is I have a small compartment in the cabin down below that is big enough to hold a "Sealed" 12 volt battery with a 2000 watt inverter. If my calculations are correct that will be plenty of power for a weekend of heating quick meals and a couple of hours of TV.
My concern is having the battery and the converter in a confined space that's not very well ventilated. The space is a stair space with the tread that opens from the top and would be open during the powering of Appliances but closed up when not in use.
Does any one see any danger from keeping a sealed battery (Optima) in a confined space?
Often you will need an inverter of three times the rated power of a device just to kick it over and get it running. I would check your system runs the load off the boat first. You are better mounting batteries in a common area, keeping things simple and giving a single service point. Mount your inverter close to it's battery and fit a proper high voltage circuit and protections to the boat. http://easyacdc.com/ has a few good pointers on setting up both low and high voltage systems correctly and safely, they also have links for more specialist services and equipment.
