I think you mean 8000 Watt (or 8kW).
There are two things you need to look at.
First, make a list of the loads that you want to be able to use on the generator. Add up the loads, and compare that with the rating of the generator.
Second, look at the largest motor on the loads that you want to serve. That will probably be a well pump, grinder pump, or blower on your HVAC system, or AC compressor. The generator kW rating needs to be about 5-6 times the motor HP rating for the generator to be able to support the starting inrush of the motor. Note that you only want to look at the single largest motor - you don't need to worry about simultaneous starting of multiple motors.
My wife has been talking about getting an emergency generator, and while I'm not convinced yet, I've done my homework and concluded that a 5kW machine would meet out needs.
