What kind of extension cord do I need from generator to furnace?
I'm totally confused and hopefully someone can help me. I have a generator that I need to hook up to my oil furnace. The furnace is 1/3 HP. It is currently connected to a switch that runs to a Leviton 5 -15 15A 125V Plug into an outlet that is on one (15) breaker in the electrical panel. The generator is Hyundai 3500W with 2 X 120 V 20A AC outlets that look like a regular grounded outlet except the left prong is a sideways T. (5-20R I believe its called) The generator also has a 120V/240V 14.5A NEMA L14-30R 30A-125/250V YGB-064 plug. It also has a voltage switch between 120V to 120V/240V.
What kind of cord do I need? Gauge? Amps? Plug Ends? Volts?
I went to an electrical store and they said they'd make a cord for me but its going to be hundreds of dollars for parts and labour. I want to make sure they aren't selling me something I don't need.
Thanks!
The 5-15R is a standard household type outlet. The generator 5-20R will also work with 5-15 plugs such as on your furnace. A standard extension cord should be all you need. Visit a hardware store and purchase an outdoor rated cord. For a 15A circuit it should be at least 14 gauge.
There is absolutely no need to build a custom cord.
