Briggs & Straton 10 HP OHV spark plug flattened. What happened?

I have a Generac Wheelhouse 5500 Generator that wouldn't start. L removed the spark plug (RC12YC) and it looked like the piston had hit it and flatened the end of it. I replaced it and it ran fine. No marks on piston either. What happened? Is there another plug that would be better?
The plug I replaced was the OEM plug.

My generac with a 10 hp briggs calls for a Champion J19LM or RJ19lM(resistor). You might compare what you are using with the above plugs. It also could have been a piece of carbon that came loose from the cylinder head or piston top. If the plug were too long it would have damaged the piston and it would do it repeatedly.
