How do I determine what brand of 100 amp main breaker I should buy to replace my 30 year old Bryant breaker?
I need to replace the main breaker on a house built in 1975. I have a relative who is an electrician who is willing to do the replacement, but he wants me to get the replacement part. The 100 amp Bryant main breaker is no longer available. What would be a compatible replacement part?
As old as the panel is, it would probably be cheaper to remove and replace the whole panel with all new breakers and do an upgrade to a 200 amp which is the standard. This would also require a new meter base and feeds, so it would total more than $1000. I'm not sure that a Bryant substitute is in production.
I hope the cable used had ground wires and they were used as they should be.
Take the old breaker to an electrical supply house, maybe one can be ordered, but it may take 2-3 weeks to get the parts. That is the other consideration, the replacement part may not be in stock, while a new panel and breakers would be.
